Atlanta Bulldog Academy solidified their claim as the top 8U in the state this past Saturday with a hard fought 12-6 B2C Championship Series win over No. 1 North Henry in double overtime. B2C Player of the Game Jayden Rodgers scored both rushing touchdowns to lift ABA into the top spot nationally.
Heavy rain, cold temperatures, and stout defensive play kept both offenses off the board in regulation. After a quick coin toss, both teams regrouped for the final championship push. Coach Reggie Arnold told his players this is what they practiced for all year. Rodgers scored on the second play of overtime to give ABA the 6-0 lead. After a North Henry response forced 2nd OT, the Bulldogs defense created a turnover inside the five yard line. Rodgers took his next carry 10 yards into the end-zone for the game-winning score. The entire ABA sideline rushed the field as the undisputed top team in the state after running through every tournament in 2018.
They took on the mantra of playing anyone, anywhere, at any time. The team is so deep talent wise; they played multiple games in a weekend to give every kid an opportunity to play.
Rodgers moved to ABA from Alabama and instantly gave the team a huge boost on both sides of the ball. He’s the spark of the offense. He’s an explosive athlete that plays running back, wide receiver, and linebacker for the Bulldogs.
Demetrius Carter aka Meaty is arguably the best defensive tackle in all of 8U football. A year after winning B2C Player of the Year, Carter put together another dominant season blowing up the backfield. Meaty is so strong and explosive off the snap he changes the game upfront for the opposing offense. Other teams have to bring their running back up to get the handoff quicker.
CJ Cypher is the quarterback for the Bulldogs. He’s a talented play-maker in total control of the offense as the field general. Cypher is a pass first quarterback with the ability to hurt you rushing the ball if needed.
Steven “Zeke the Freak” McClendon is the heart and soul of the team at FB and inside linebacker. He’s aggressive, strong, and plays with a high football motor. He’s the vocal leader of the team.
ABA will defend their No.1 ranking nationally at the Battle Youth National Championship in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on December 13th and 14th.
