[tab id=1]

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Last year’s Junior All American Camp was a great opportunity to see some top notch female basketball talent.  Our continued coverage of some of these athletes has allowed us to witness their careers develop into something great.

We met three girls (Katlyn Gilbert, Sydney Shelton, and Tyasha Harris) from Indiana who caught our attention immediately.  They were fast, talented, had great court vision, and great attitudes.  This trio would help lead their respective teams to victory many times, and have been highly recruited by many Division I institutions.

Recently Born to Compete sat down with them, and here is what they had to say:

Katlyn Gilbert

AKA “Dip-N-Dotz”

Quick Stats:

Height: 5’9″

Age:  13

Class:  2018

Position:  Point Guard primarily, but can play all five if needed.

Favorite sport:  Basketball

Sports that you participate in:  Track, Volleyball

kateUSAtrialsB2C: What makes you an elite player?

Katlyn:  First I give all credit to GOD, he has given me the abilities to become very good. I like to think I have a very high basketball IQ, and I like to use my length to my advantage.  I have an opportunity to work out daily at the Best Choice field house with some of the best trainers. I try to use a ton of effort in practice, so it becomes second nature and carries over to the game.

B2c:  What are the records or awards, team and individual, that you have received?

Katlyn:  Jr All-American Camp All-Star, MVP of my school’s Basketball and Track teams, 4 AAU State Titles, 4 time National AAU runner-up, 1 National elite 8.

B2C:  What do you bring to your team that helps them dominate?

Katlyn:  I try to bring hard work and leadership to my team by constantly talking and communicating during games and practices. I try to set the tempo running and play with pride. I get to train with some of the top male and female High School players in Indiana, such as Tyasha Harris, Sydney Shelton, Zach and Josh Rutland, and Gary Bonds.  These athletes give me an unbelievable opportunity to measure up against some of the best talent. They help me focus on the little things about the game like boxing out all the time, not relaxing once a pass is made, and not over dribbling.  They improve my confidence and push me all the time.

B2C:  What do you like to do when you are not competing?

Katlyn:  Sleep, text, Instagram, relax, watch TV and movies, and hang out at the Best Choice fieldhouse.

B2C:  What are your short term and long term goals?

Katlyn:  My short term goals are to win an AAU national title, make the USA 16U Olympic team, and be a Good Christian. Long term, my goals are to continue to play all Olympic levels, play college ball, play in the WNBA, have a great family with kids, and go to Heaven.

B2C:  What colleges are looking at you right now?

Katlyn:  I’ve already committed to the University of Evansville.

B2C: Who is your favorite professional athlete and why?  Who do you model your game after?

Katlyn:  Maya Moore, She is a spiritual leader and has a major influence on and off the court, she is great at what she does.  A lot of people tell me that I remind them of Candace Parker, so I take pride in that and try to exceed those expectations.

B2C:  Who has the greatest influence over your life?

Katlyn:  God and my parents.

B2C:  What is your favorite sports memory?

Katlyn:  Going to Colorado Springs to the USA Olympic Training Center at 13 trying to make the 16 roster and seeing my number on the non-cut list.  It was a humbling experience, I didn’t make at 13 but I will try to make it at 15.  Also, winning the Indiana AAU State Championship this year. I love my Best Choice Team #BCOTG
