B2C Elite Series: The Ladies of the Gulf Coast

PRICHARD, AL — As we travel across the county covering youth sports, we are very fortunate to see different levels of greatness coming from the nation’s youth athletes.  The female basketball talent coming from the Gulf Coast would not be an exception.

The Gulf Coast Twisters AAU team has a roster stacked with talent, with five of the best female basketball players making a huge impact in the game.

Angel Carthen

Quick Stats:

Height:  5’10

Position: Wing

School:  SF Faith Academy

Hometown:  Mobile, Alabama

Class:  2014

Favorite Sport:  Basketball

Angel:  I work hard, have a great positive attitude and have leadership qualities.

B2C:  Any records or awards, team and individual?

Angel:  South Region and State Final 4 All-Tournament team, All County, most improved player, Ram Award, 5A state champions, and Press-Register Sweet 16.

B2C:  What do you bring to your team that helps them dominate? 

Angel:  I bring a “don’t quit” attitude and a lot of hustle.

B2C:  What do you like to do when you are not competing?

Angel:  In the weight room, practicing, and spending time with my family.

B2C:  What are your short term and long term goals?

Angel:  Short term: Get a scholarship, win another state title, and end my high school career knowing I gave it my all. Long term: Going to school to get a degree in Engineering or Mathematics, and influencing young people to living a better life.

B2C:  What colleges are looking at you right now?

Angel:  Grand Canyon State, University of West Florida, and several smaller schools.

B2C:  Favorite professional athlete and why? Who do you model your game after? 

Angel:  Lebron James, because he is able to play multiple positions and dominate, and my older brother, Theodore Carthen II.

B2C:  Who has the greatest influence over your life?

Angel:  My mom has the greatest influence on my life.

B2C:  Favorite sports memory?

Angel:  Winning the 5A state title and getting my first big block.

Jas Hill

Quick Stats:

Height:  5’9

Position: Shooting Guard/Small Forward

School:  LeFlore High School

Hometown:  Mobile, Alabama

Class:  2016

Favorite Sport:  Basketball

Jas:  I have play great defense, have strong leadership skills, show versatility, am very determined, and I have heart!

B2C:  Any records or awards, team and individual?

Jas:   Made the all-county team, 2016 All-star team at the Spring Premier Classic in Greensboro, NC, and won the middle school championship back to back in Mobile County (AL).

B2C:  What do you bring to your team that helps them dominate?

Jas:  I lead by example and let my actions speak for itself.

B2C:  What do you like to do when you are not competing?

Jas:  Practice or homework.

B2C:  What are your short term and long term goals?

Jas:  Short term, I want to continue to get better, win the state championship, and get more scholarships!  My long term goals are to graduate college, and then get drafted to WNBA.

B2C:  What colleges are looking at you right now?

Jas:  College of Charleston, Winthrop, and several other smaller schools.

B2C:  Favorite professional athlete and why?  Who do you model your game after?

Jas:  Maya Moore, because she has combination of talent. We both play team ball and can take over at a moments notice!

B2C:  Who has the greatest influence over your life?

Jas:  God and my mother

B2C:  Favorite sports memory?

Jas:  Playing against our rival (Vigor high).  We were losing 60-63 and I shot a 3 and got fouled and hit all 3 free throws to send the game into overtime.

Jewel Hill

Position: Shooting Guard/Small Forward

School:  St. Luke’s Episcopal School

Hometown:  Mobile, Alabama

Class:  2014

Favorite Sport:  Basketball

Jewel:  How I incorporate my athleticism with my knowledge of basketball and use it on the court.

B2C:  Any records or awards, team and individual?

Jewel:  We set a school record with 30 wins (Record: 30-2). I made South Regional All tournament team. I also received 2 Mobile Optimist Club player of the week awards , Mobile  Optimist Club Player of the year award for year 2012-2013 season, 2nd team All-State, Press Register Sweet 16, and selected to play in the upcoming Alabama All-Star game in July.

B2C:  What do you bring to your team that helps them dominate?

Jewel:  I bring leadership and a voice. I direct my teammates, while also listening to them. I also bring my versatility, that creates mismatches.

B2C:  What do you like to do when you are not competing?

Jewel:  Watch basketball, listen to music, and joke around with my teammates.

B2C:  What are your short term and long term goals?

Jewel:  Short term goals are to graduate with an honors diploma and finish high school ball with another successful season. My long term goals are to graduate with a masters degree and continue to play basketball.

B2C:  What colleges are looking at you right now?

Jewel:  Winthrop University , South Alabama, UAB, and others.

B2C:  Favorite sports memory?

Jewel:  I have many good memories, but my favorites are always playing against the toughest teams and beating them.

B2C:  Who do you model your game after?

Jewel:  I model my game after my sister and Skylar Diggins. My game consist of both guard and post moves.

B2C:  Favorite professional athlete and why?

Jewel:  My favorite professional athlete is Dwayne Wade, because he knows how to step up and lead his team. He also knows when to step aside and help his team in other ways.

B2C:  Who has the greatest influence over your life?

Jewel:  My older sister, she influences me in almost every way.

Position: Power Forward/Small Forward

School:  LeFlore High School

Hometown:  Mobile, Alabama

Class:  2016

Japronica:  Every time I get on the floor I try to work harder and play harder than everyone and lead by example!

Japronica:  All-county, Press-register Sweet 16

B2C:  What do you bring to your team that helps them dominate?

Japronica:  I have great hands and great athleticism.

B2C:  What do you like to do when you are not competing?

Japronica:  Working on my game and visiting with my family and friends

B2C:  What are your short term and long term goals?

Japronica:  Short term: to graduate, get scholarships, and win the state championship. Long term: to get a degree, play in the WNBA, represent my neighborhood, and never forget where I have come from.

B2C:  What colleges are looking at you right now?

Japronica:  South Alabama, UAB, and several other colleges

B2C:  Favorite professional athlete and why? Who do you model your game after?

Japronica:  Lebron James. Because he does so much on the floor and is a great leader.

B2C:  Who has the greatest influence over your life?

Japronica:  My grandmother and grandfather

B2C:  Favorite sports memory?

Japronica:   When I scored 32 points and grabbed 28 rebounds in our win over rival Vigor.  Jas Hill made 3 free throws to send the game into overtime!

Janeen Johnson

School:  Williamson High School

Hometown:  Mobile, Alabama

Class:  2016

Favorite Sport:  Basketball

Other Sports:  Outdoor Track and Field 200M Champion

Janeen:  I listen to the coach, hustle, and go hard in practice every day.

B2C:  Any records or awards, team and individual?

Janeen:  All-county basketball, All-county track, 200 meter champion,  2011 Middle school girls championship.

B2C:  What do you bring to your team that helps them dominate? 

Janeen:  I bring great defense, effort, team work, and motivation!

B2C:  What do you like to do when you are not competing?

Janeen:  Practice to get better.

B2C:  What are your short term and long term goals?

Janeen:  Short term:  I want to set new records in track, graduate, and get more scholarships.  Long term: Get a degree, be successful, and be a role model for other kids from my neighborhood.

B2C:  What colleges are looking at you right now?

Janeen:  Tennessee, College of Charleston, South Alabama and several smaller colleges.

B2C:  Favorite professional athlete and why?  Who do you model your game after?

Janeen:  LeBron James, because I can relate to what he can do.  He is a leader that leads his team to victories and championships.

B2C:  Who has the greatest influence over your life?

Janeen:  My dad and my oldest sister Jessica Johnson.

B2C:  Favorite sports memory?

Janeen:  When we won 60-13 (at Williamson) and everybody played as a team and worked together!
