High school is always fun to do since I get to see players that I have seen for years become what we thought they would always be. Since we have be partnered with NBC 11 Alive here in Atlanta GA it gives me time to see all the games either in person or in a climate controlled room. Which during cold and rainy days aren’t too bad.
Nolan Edmonds from Alpharetta has a chance to be special. I watched him put up almost 200 yards total and a couple of TD’s. It was a big time rivalry game against Milton and Edmonds showed up big time. He would eventually help his team win a close one 24-21
Roswell is going to make a serious run at the state title. They are built from the back end kind of like a Coach Pete Carroll team. Meaning that their secondary is very good. Add in the fact that they have a monster in the middle with Tre Lamar then you really start to respect this defense. On offense is where everything is changing for the Roswell Hornets. Sheldon Evans has to be the most underrated running back in the country. All he does is produce. Quinatarius Neely can make this team special. If he continues to help the Roswell Hornets by making plays from the QB position then this team is a lock for a great playoff run.
How in the world does Buford stay so good, Im serious! A couple of years ago they have a whole bunch of starters graduate and they come back the next year and win state with a young team. Now they lose Issac Nauta who is the best Tight End in the country and they continue to keep rolling. This past weekend they beat a team 77-0. How do you beat a team 77 to 0 when you only have 230 yards total offense….WOW!!!
Lastly I have been telling everyone for years that Jonesboro Quarterback Zerrick Cooper is the best QB prospect in Georgia in his class. Here is why, he is accurate, he has a NFL arm, he is a leader and in big games he is going to show up. That last part is very important, to me it is what separates the good QB’s from the great ones. Which QB can go against another great team, get beat up and keep fighting back and making plays for your team to win the ball game. This past weekend Jonesboro played Sandy Creek. Jonesboro was down by 13-3 headed into the fourth quarter, that’s when Zerrick Cooper would take over the game. All he did was rally his team to a with two touchdown passes in the 4th quarter for the 17-15 comeback win which included a game winning drive a Cooper connected with Jordan Griffin with 53 seconds left in the game. After being out a whole year Cooper shook off the rust the first game, came back in the second game with a thrilling victory and now it seems like Cooper and the Jonesboro Cardinals can ride this wave all the way to the playoffs.
Honestly this might have been the best opening weekend of youth football ever around the country. Their were so many great performances that it’s going to be hard to see who is going to win player of the week. The B2C Prime 21 rankings are out for middle school and the #1 team is Milton and it should be. They were the most dominant last year and nothing has changed as they beast Roswell 40-12. Not only do they win big against teams they are supposed to be but they win big against teams that are highly ranked. #4 Hillgrove vs #9 Rome was a game that everyone wanted to see as a lot of people were starting to doubt last year B2C QB of the Year Harrison Bailey in big time games. So how does he respond? He puts up 260 yards passing and 280 yards rushing. Arguably the best BIG GAME READY performance since Evan Berry of Fairburn put up monster numbers against #1 ranked Central Dekalb back in 2009. Hillgrove would win the game 44-28.
Evan Berry is #1 for the team in white.
Lawrenceville and Archer would put on a show as probably the most excting game of the week as Kendall Martin from Lawrenceville and Tyler Roach from Archer would both make huge plays all game long. The game would end with a goaline stand as Archer would defeat Lawrenceville 26-24.
Dacula has a player that is very good, Dwon Odom can be special as he is a do all type of player. At wideout is where he can put worry in a defensive coordinator mind as you can literally just throw it up to him and he will come down with it as he did this past weekend leading his Dacula Falcons to a victory over Brookwood.
#3 ranked Central Dekalb is in for a long season. Every game is going to be a battle. Does this mean that they will lose more, no it doesn’t. Right now they have a huge problem and it has been that way for years with this team. The problem is scoring. Talent will always give them the possibility of making big plays but scheme wise they are going to have to figure out some kind of way to get the offense flowing. It wasn’t more apparent than on Saturday night against #2 ranked Fayette County. They could hardly move the ball consistently, in spots yes but consistently no. Faith would eventually win the game 8-6 but it could have been worse if Fayette holds onto the ball in the 20 or doesn’t throw a very bad interception around the end zone. Speaking of Fayette, Cam McDowell might have turned in his best performance since last year early in the season. On offense besides that interception he was efficient for what he was asked to do, completing a big pass play and running for a long TD. On defense he was lights out at corner as the 6 foot tall McDowell made huge plays in the passing game and in the running game. Big upset of the week has to go to Shoal Creek big win over Decatur Army. Shoals Creek ended up winning big 30-7
This is still the best age group out there. The Atlanta Ducks proved why they are the best team out there. They have multiple weapons and they have multiple ways they can score on you. Not being able to really move the ball efficiently the Atlanta Ducks went to the spread to give the Atlanta Tigers a different look. #11 the QB responded by hitting the open WR #3 multiple times. Then with he defense on their heels Coach Kai would dial up a coupe of runs from the empty backfield that would get #1 going. At the end of the game the #1 ranked Atlanta Ducks would go on a win 13-0.
